TPEF fulfills hopes among rural youth

Fourth year students and out of school youth from the municipality of Daram and nearby island barangay Rizal stepped down from the boat, after a 30 minute-travel from the town proper, to take the scholarship examination in Bagacay National High School. The Bagacay National High School is located in Bagacay, an island barangay, hosted the one day scholarship examination activity on September 27, 2014. Students took the qualifying exam in the morning and interview in the afternoon. Examinees were from the three public high schools namely Bagacay National High School, Daram National High School and Rizal National High School. Understanding the economic limitations of the rural students particularly those who are from the outlying barangays, TPEF supports the one day scholarship search including applicants’ food and travel costs.

Eight graduating high school students and out of school-youths—three females and five males—were awarded the college scholarship grant starting school year 2015. At present, they study in Samar State University in Catbalogan and Northwest State University in Calbayog with education and industrial technology courses. Another eight students were awarded the college scholarship in Kabugao, Apayao, Cordillera Administrative Region in the same school year or a total of 16 scholars from the rural poor communities.

The whole selection process from identification of the public high school, ocular survey and actual scholarship examination process were implemented successfully through the assistance of TPEF’s partner NGO, the Center for Empowerment and Resource Development, Inc., Dep Ed local official Jacinto Yassan, school heads Lito Carausos and Janette Rescopin.
