Back to School is Back to Hope
In September 2025, 6.9-magnitude earthquake damaged buildings at Caputatan Norte Integrated School in Medellin, Cebu, disrupting the learning journey of nearly 373 learners.
In response, the TORM Philippines Education Foundation (TPEF) constructed four Temporary Learning Spaces (TLS), providing learners with safe and functional classrooms while the school continues its recovery efforts. More than temporary structures, these learning spaces serve as a bridge between disruption and normalcy, ensuring that education can continue despite the challenges brought about by the disaster.

The classrooms were strategically built within the high school area, as portions of the elementary school grounds remain unsafe due to ongoing aftershocks. With these temporary learning spaces in place, learners can resume face-to-face classes in a safer environment rather than relying on temporary tents or experiencing prolonged interruptions to their education. The project also reflected the spirit of bayanihan, bringing together volunteers, partners, and community members in a shared effort to support the school’s recovery.

A significant milestone was recently celebrated when Caputatan Norte Integrated School held its first flag ceremony since the earthquake. Despite limited space and staggered class schedules to accommodate learners from Kindergarten to Grade 10, the school community gathered with renewed optimism and hope for the future.

Teachers, parents, and community members expressed their deep appreciation for the support provided by TPEF. According to School Principal Assumption Canar, the temporary learning spaces have enabled learners to continue their education in a safe and supportive environment while the school continues its recovery efforts.
Through initiatives like this, TPEF continues to support communities affected by disasters by helping restore access to education and creating opportunities for learners to move forward with hope and resilience.
