TPEF’s Impactful Initiatives in the Island Communities
The TORM Philippines Education Foundation is on a journey to improve the lives of island communities with social development projects in Daram, Samar, and Agutaya, Palawan. Understanding the link between quality education and supportive learning spaces, TPEF aims to create meaningful change.
Enhancing Learning in Daram, Samar
In Daram, Samar, with a poverty rate of 41.2%, TPEF is improving learning conditions at Sugod Elementary School. This school, accommodating grades 1-6, had been operating in a deteriorating makeshift classroom. To create a better learning space, TPEF donated construction materials to rebuild the classroom for the 57 students. Local scholar-graduates Jeric Barredo and Novalyn Abasula led the turnover. Their return as teachers highlights their dedication to their community’s educational progress.
Supporting Education in Agutaya, Palawan
In Agutaya, Palawan, a remote area facing geographical challenges, TPEF has made significant contributions to Concepcion National High School and its extension. To meet the urgent need for educational materials and equipment, TPEF provided school chairs, solar panels, and an amplifier. These resources helped alleviate the furniture shortage, enabled the use of technology through solar-powered electricity, and improved the audio
quality for events. The Andres Soriano Foundation, Inc., TPEF’s partner NGO, successfully facilitated the turnover, benefiting 1,189 students and 45 staff members.
In summary, these efforts highlight TPEF’s dedication to advancing quality education in underprivileged island areas, acknowledging that a solid educational foundation, supported by adequate facilities, is crucial in developing skilled learners who will drive future economic development.
